Transfer News: West Ham United make £32.5m bid for Liverpool target Amadou Onana

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United have made a £32.5million offer for 20-year-old Lille midfielder, Amadou Onana, and the Ligue 1 club is apparently mulling over the bid.

The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Liverpool Echo] claimed earlier this week that Liverpool are one of Onana’s several ‘admirers’. It seems as if the Hammers mean business this summer.

They have also apparently made bids for Gianluca Scamacca and Armando Broja. Jesse Lingard is also apparently on their list, after the Englishman ran down his contract at Manchester United last month.

But perhaps it is their bid for Onana that would grab the Reds’ attention. If they really are keen on signing him, perhaps Jurgen Klopp and co would be wise to react to such a bid.

What should LFC do?

Of course, Onana isn’t the only defensive midfielder in the world that Liverpool can buy in the near future, but if he is appreciated by the Reds, then trying our hand at signing wouldn’t hurt.

He can play as a number six and if needed, can deputise as a centre-back. Onana is still young and has a lot of years ahead of him.

The Belgian international only joined Lille last year from Germany and it seems that just one good season in France has won him a lot of suitors. Whether the Hammers have their bid accepted is something only time will tell.

But it is time that Liverpool plan for the future and bring in a young midfielder to potentially replace some of our ageing first-team options. James Milner is still on our books but it can’t be long until he hangs up his boots.

It is in our best interest to target a suitable midfielder. A move for Jude Bellingham in 2023 could be made, but that is still a long time away from now.
