Liverpool tried to convince Rodrygo to leave Real Madrid earlier this year

Liverpool were one of the clubs interested in bringing Real Madrid forward Rodrygo to the Premier League earlier this year, according to Defensa Central (h/t Liverpool Echo).

The Brazilian is an exciting prospect and has been a regular in Carlo Ancelloti’s plans at the Bernabeu. Newcastle and the Reds wanted his signature, but the 21-year-old “was not interested” in moving.

Now, Rodrygo is a Champions League winner. He also signed a new contract at Madrid earlier this summer. It would appear that our chance is now gone.

While the Brazilian has been in and out of the starting XI at Madrid, his impact coming off the bench has been undeniable, as seen in the Champions League against Chelsea and Manchester City.

Playing primarily on the right side of the attack, the 21-year-old has had to compete for game time with Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale. Ancelotti has also opted to play midfielder Federico Valverde on the right-hand side.

Rodrygo’s most memorable moment last season came in the second leg against City where the Brazilian scored twice in a span of two minutes to bring Los Blancos back from the brink of elimination. The Spanish giants eventually went on to beat us in the final.

Liverpool wanted to prize away the 21-year-old, but he wasn’t interested. While Rodrygo is a great prospect, he still has a long way to go to establish himself. Ancelotti doesn’t see him as a starter yet.

The Reds squad have their own attacking talents, with Mohamed Salah leading the line. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are dependable players who’ve made a place for themselves in Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

Fans wouldn’t worry too much with Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino also in the forward line. It remains to be seen whether a few years down the line Liverpool will attempt to once again bring Rodrygo to Anfield.
