Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson pumped up to win the Community Shield

While speaking in an interview as quoted by Liverpool’s Official Site, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is hoping that Liverpool can harness their prior Community Shield grief to defeat Manchester City on Saturday and win the trophy for the first time since 2006 as a result.

The Premier League champions’ game against City on Saturday will undoubtedly be the first of many heavyweight matches between the two teams this season.

Klopp’s team would want to get the better of Pep Guardiola’s squad after having the title snatched away from them in the closing moments of the campaign following the Citizens’ dramatic comeback against Aston Villa.

While serving as captain for seven years, Henderson has won six trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, but he has yet to win the Community Shield. The Reds lost to both Manchester City in 2019 and Arsenal in 2020, which, in his opinion, will serve as additional inspiration for the Reds on Saturday night.

The Liverpool captain showed his hunger and commitment in a recent interview by suggesting he would do everything to win the trophy against Manchester City.

“It’s another chance to win silverware, and we haven’t won it before. So, of course, we want to go there and we want to win the game, and we want to win the trophy. So we’ll do everything in our power to do that and hopefully puts us in good stead going into the Premier League season the week after.”

With Klopp’s team coming as near to a quadruple as possible at the end of the previous season, it was a two-for-one deal in the worst way possible. And even though City dominated the standings from December through May, Liverpool came agonisingly close to overtaking them.

The encounter on Saturday will also be a test for the new-look squads as both have improved over the summer while also losing seasoned forwards.

It allows us to see Erling Haaland’s and Darwin Nunez’s adjustments as well as, probably more crucially, how Liverpool and City fare without Raheem Sterling and Sadio Mane, respectively.

Jordan Henderson’s desire to begin the season with a victory makes sense, if only to set the tone for the upcoming weeks. Even if they lose to their fierce rivals, Liverpool can find comfort in the knowledge that a result like that can lead to even greater things.
