Former Chelsea defender William Gallas claims Liverpool ‘wont finish in top four’
Ex-Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas, speaking on behalf of Genting Casino (h/t Daily Star) has surprisingly claimed that Liverpool would not be able to finish in the top 4. He also claimed that either London club would win the league.
The Reds had a successful league campaign last season narrowly missing out on the Premier League title last season to Manchester City on the last day. They won the FA Cup and League Cup on penalties vs Chelsea. The Merseysiders also made it to the UEFA Champions League final.
Gallas claims that Liverpool would miss Sadio Mane and the void left by him is too large for Liverpool to fill. Mane made a move to Bayern Munich this summer worth £35m.
Gallas’ claims comes as a shock as Liverpool have not finished outside the top 4 since the 2015/16 campaign. He also believes that a London club will emerge as the league winner.
“As an ex-London player, I have to say Chelsea, Arsenal, or Tottenham to win the Premier League. On top four, Liverpool can miss out because they don’t have Sadio Mane anymore and Diaz does not have the same impact.”
“Liverpool always concede goals too, like we saw against Fulham. Even if I like how Liverpool play, I think it will be City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham.”
With Liverpool having drawn 2-2 against a newly promoted Fulham in a very abysmal performance, the doubts have already started creeping in. Midfield depth and age, forwards’ consistency and many other questions keep flying here and there anytime the club tends to misstep.
However, Gallas’ comments seem a bit cheeky and rooted in bias. Having played for those three London clubs in the past, it’s not a surprise to see him make that comment but saying this Jurgen Klopp team not making top four is just a comment that will amuse rather than anger Liverpool fans.
An injury crisis stands in between Liverpool and a successful season. Our depth in midfield isn’t the best and Thiago Alcantara’s latest injury raises more questions about whether the Reds have a strong bench for next season.
