Liverpool star ready to compensate fans impacted by jersey number change

Joe Gomez is ready to reimburse Liverpool fans who purchased his number 12 jersey

Liverpool, through their official website have announced that the supporters who bought a replica of the Joe Gomez number 12 jersey will be privy to a special gesture. The centre-back, switched to number 2 this season, dropping his previous number.

Since joining the club back in 2015, Joe Gomez sported the ’12’ on the back of his jersey. This season, he made a switch, changing over to 2. The change was first on display in Liverpool’s FA Community Shield victory over Manchester City earlier this year in July. He is now going to personally reimburse fans who have been directly impacted by the change in number.

“As a gesture to those who have already purchased through official club stores a 2022-23 replica shirt printed with ‘Gomez 12’, Joe will personally reimburse fans by way of a like-for-like exchange for a ‘Gomez 2’ jersey.”

The offer for reimbursement includes all ‘Gomez 12’ kits purchased through the club shop at Anfield or the club’s official store. Naturally, a proof of purchase would be essential for the reimbursement to go through.

The Englishman has made 143 appearances for the Reds across all competitions since joining us from Charlton Athletic in 2015. He was a vital cog in the Reds Premier League winning 19/20 season, having a formidable partnership alongside Virgil van Dijk throughout the season.

Since then, Gomez’s career has been injury-laid forcing him down the pecking order. He missed a total of 39 games in the 2020/21 season owing to a patella tendon rupture.

He was part of the matchday squad against Fulham in the opening matchday this season and featured in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday, replacing Nathaniel Phillips after 63 minutes.

The occasional right-back can now build a strong case for himself post injuries to Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate. A good run of appearances should strengthen his case to appear in the starting XI more often than not.

Gomez is still battling a minor issue, because of which he was only deemed fit for the bench against Palace. He would look forward to being 100% fit for the derby against Manchester United on 23rd August.

With Gomez now penning down a new long-term contract, the club has trusted him to be one of the defensive mainstays alongside Ibrahima Konate for the long-term future. He would certainly look to avoid injuries as he did last campaign, and establish himself as one of the first names on the gaffer’s team-sheet.
