Darwin Nunez breaks silence after red card fiasco as Steve Nicol shares Liverpool anxiety

Darwin Nunez announced via Twitter that he “will learn” from his mistakes after his game against Crystal Palace. The Uruguayan was on the receiving end of a straight red after he head-butted Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen.

“I am aware of the ugly attitude I had. I’m here to learn from my mistakes and it won’t happen again.”

An early second-half sending-off for the 23-year-old made it tough for the Reds to equalise after a Wilfried Zaha goal earlier in the 32nd minute saw the Eagles take the lead. Following a few intense moments of pressure, Luis Diaz took a distinctive effort from outside the box halfway into the second half to see the points shared.

Liverpool’s shock draw to Crystal Palace resulted in doubts creeping into the minds of Liverpool’s well-wishers, including club legend Steve Nicol. The former right-back was an undeniably integral part of Bob Paisley’s squad which won the club so many trophies.

Nicol, speaking on ESPN FC (h/t Liverpool Echo) sounded rather anxious pertaining to the club’s title race.

“It’s just when you said Liverpool are going to win the title, I can’t honestly, my brain didn’t go yes, I’m a little worried already.”

Him being worried has reason to it, as Liverpool have not had the start to the season they would have hoped for. The Reds presently are already four points behind league leaders Manchester City, who have attained the maximum points possible from two games.

According to Nicol, Liverpool’s midfield is “a bit blank” at the moment, with no creativity to offer. “It’s just a bunch of guys running around”, he added. The Scottsman also spoke about how there is a need for personality in the midfield.

Jurgen Klopp might now have heard from a million people about the lack of midfield depth causing Liverpool setbacks. It will be interesting to see whether the German and his recruitment team sign a midfielder before the transfer deadline.

A strong start to the season is important if you want to win the league title. Liverpool found that out the hard way last season as their brilliant form in the second half of the season wasn’t enough to catch Manchester City, who made full use of the lead they had built up.

And that is exactly why it is right to start worrying about the title charge being over so early on in the season if the Reds continue this hideous form. Nunez’s unavailability, in that regard, has really put Klopp on the ropes for the next three games – against Manchester United, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United.
