Liverpool transfer target Ismael Bennacer rejects new AC Milan contract

One of Liverpool’s midfield targets in the transfer window, Ismael Bennacer has rejected a new contract at AC Milan according to calciomercatoweb (h/t Liverpool Echo). The Rossoneri value Bennacer at around €40million.

It has been suggested from the first week of August that Liverpool were looking to launch a bid of €40m for the Algerian. At such turbulent times, a midfielder of Bennacer’s merit will be a boon for Liverpool.

The 24-year-old’s representatives informed Milan that they wouldn’t accept a new contract unless there is a significant pay rise. He earns €33,500 per week according to his existing deal.

Bennacer’s contract with AC Milan expires in 2024. The Italian outfit would look to get on new terms with the Algerian instead of seeing the deal through, with his value further down in 2023.

In 31 appearances last season, he scored two goals and got a solitary assist from defensive midfield. The season was a very successful one for him personally and for the team as well. Milan won the scudetto after 10 years, under manager Stefano Pioli, last season.

Thiago’s hamstring injury has put Liverpool in dire straits. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is also out for a prolonged period. Meanwhile, Curtis Jones is also sitting out owing to injuries.

The Algerian rejecting a deal with AC Milan comes just about at the right time for Liverpool as it makes him open to a move. With Naby Keita’s contract talks also taking a halt, it won’t be a surprise if Liverpool now actually venture into the market to sign a midfielder.
