Jurgen Klopp has “heard” that Manchester United star Anthony Martial is fit to play on Monday
Jurgen Klopp, in his press conference (h/t Liverpool Echo) spoke about Manchester United’s Anthony Martial. The Liverpool gaffer apparently “heard” that Martial is fit to play on Monday against the Reds. The Frenchman last played Liverpool in the league in January 2021.
In the preseason fixture between the teams earlier in July, Martial was one of the scorers for United in a 4-0 win for them. In 11 appearances against Liverpool, he has two goals and one assist.
Martial was ruled out with a hamstring injury for much of this month and missed their opening two games of the season. Klopp also went on to praise United’s midfield. Both teams are coming into this fixture in bad form.
Liverpool have drawn both their games, Fulham and Crystal Palace going into Old Trafford. Meanwhile, United have had a worse start, losing both their opening games, to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
Martial’s apparent return to fitness adds him to the list of strikers available for Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman already has Cristiano Ronaldo and Alejandro Garnacho. Marcus Rashford can also put in a shift in centre-forward role.
Liverpool’s recent form against United in the league is pretty good. The last time The Red Devils had the better off Liverpool was in March 2018. More recently though, the Reds enjoyed a very famous visit to Old Trafford, scoring five past Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
Martial, meanwhile, had a pretty good debut goal at United against the Reds back in 2015, when he scored once to beat us 3-1 at Old Trafford. Speaking of United’s midfield and Martial’s return, gaffer Jurgen Klopp said the following.
“I heard Martial can play now. Another boy with speed and technique. Quality in midfield; Eriksen, Fernandes, Fred – real quality.”
Martial was let to join Sevilla on loan earlier this year in January. In terms of midfielders, Ten Hag signed up Cristian Eriksen in the opening weeks of the transfer window.
