Liverpool consider making offer for Barcelona midfielder and Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong

According to Spanish outlet El Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are thinking about making an offer for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman has long been on Manchester United’s radar this summer but no move has materialised so far. Manager Xavi Hernandez wants to keep the Netherlands international at Camp Nou.

However, the Reds are thinking about testing the Blaugrana manager’s resolve with a £52million initial offer and £7.5million in add-ons, taking the total figure to £59.5million.

There is an obvious gap to be filled in manager Jurgen Klopp’s midfield right now. The Reds started James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Harvey Elliott in their embarrassing derby loss against Man United this Monday.

A much-needed signing

That is one of the drabbest set of midfielders Klopp could have picked for that game- at least that’s what a big number of LFC fans would tell you. Klopp’s idea to rely on the injury-prone Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita has expectedly backfired.

The three were out with injuries against the Red Devils and it remains to be seen if they are back anytime soon. We cannot go into this season with Milner as our first-choice midfielder.

He is experienced but perhaps at 36, he is too experienced to be a regular starter for us. Henderson’s lack of creativity frustrates fans to a massive extent and getting a player of De Jong’s ilk would be a statement signing.

At 25, he could be the midfielder that can offer his best years to Liverpool in the foreseeable future. The price being quoted above isn’t exorbitant as well if LFC make that bid and Barca do accept it.

But for Liverpool fans, this seems too good to be true. They would perhaps be more convinced if this news builds on from here and gathers pace in the coming days.
