Mohamed Salah prioritises Premier League win over Champions League glory
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Youtube Channel, Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah chose the Premier League as the trophy he wants to win the most this season. The Egyptian spoke to the channel before the Reds’ loss to Manchester United.
When prompted whether he wants to win the Premier League or the UEFA Champions League, the 30-year-old was quick to say that he’d want to win the Premier League this season over the European Championship.
“I always say Champions League, but this year I can say the Premier League”
The former AS Roma winger has won both the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool once each. The Reds won the UCL in 2019 and followed it up with a 19th league title the next year.
Salah in red-hot form
Since joining the Reds in the summer of 2017, the former Chelsea man has been a revelation for the Reds. In 258 appearances across all competitions, he has netted 159 times, assisting on 64 occasions.
Until Sadio Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich earlier this summer, they formed a very formidable front-three partnership alongside Roberto Firmino. The trio were crucial to the Reds’ success under Jurgen Klopp.
Last season was very successful for Liverpool. Winning two domestic trophies in addition to reaching the finals of the UEFA Champions League and narrowly missing out on the Premier League by a single point. Salah went through a purple patch last season winning both the golden boot and the playmaker award in the league.
The winger was also asked about his personal goals for the upcoming season. He wouldn’t reveal much other than saying:
“I never say before the season [my individual goals]. But the collective one is the Premier League and Champions League. It has to be. That was my target last season and I go again until I win both again.”
Liverpool’s poor start to the season has put a barricade to their title charge this season, but with their star winger sounding as optimistic as always, it would not be shocking to see the Reds come out of these testing times and play more convincingly throughout the season.
The former Fiorentina winger signed a long-term contract with the Reds coming into the season, securing his future at Merseyside until 2025. He would hope to get his hands on silverware towards the end of the season.
