Liverpool are interested in Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong
According to The Times (h/t TBR Football), Liverpool are keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer. Reds Boss Jurgen Klopp recently announced that he would want cover in the midfield.
After their absurd start to the season, it became evidently visible that Liverpool needed reinforcements in the middle of the pitch. James Milner starting league games and that too a derby at 36 isn’t the most ideal situation for the Reds. Injury situations and a very ageing midfield are the major issues the club is currently encountering.
In recent weeks, Matheus Nunes, Ismael Bennacer and Ruben Neves had been linked with the club. The newest entrant to that list is Dutchman Frenkie de Jong. He has been subject to a move away from the Catalan Giants.
A good fit for Liverpool?
Very recently, his alleged move to Manchester United broke down citing delays in negotiations. Meanwhile, the Red Devils did themselves a world of good by signing Casemiro.
A few days ago, former Red Jose Enrique took to Twitter to express his desire of watching Frenkie in Liverpool colours. The Catalan Giants’ tough financial times may force them to sell the 25-year-old for a rebated price. Moreover, his performances over a prolonged period of time have not been up to the hype created for him.
With a long list of Liverpool midfielders sidelined owing to injury, it would be a wise decision to get a midfielder of De Jong’s calibre on board. Without Thiago Alcantara, the creativity in midfield seems to be rather lost. The Dutchman might be able to give that “spark” which otherwise seems to be lost in Liverpool’s midfield without the Spaniard.
Moreover, a midfield trio of Fabinho, Thiago and De Jong seems exciting to watch. If the Reds anyhow manage to pull this signing off, it will be a statement signing as Liverpool does not tend to sign superstars, but rather make them.
