Liverpool turn their attention to Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves
According to certain reports from 90min (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have identified Ruben Neves as a target this transfer window amidst their search for a new midfielder.
The 25-year-old Portuguese has Premier League experience, playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers under Nuno Espirito Santos and now Bruno Lage. Primarily a defensive midfielder, the former FC Porto player can also play further upfield.
Jurgen Klopp admitted to being wrong in terms of not recruiting a midfielder earlier in the window, and has accepted that the stance in terms of a new signing has changed. Liverpool’s Assistant Coach, Pepijn Lijnders had identified Neves as a player who would suit the Reds’ style of play in 2019.
New Dynamic to Liverpool
He was indeed very instrumental in seeing Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League from the Championship in the 2017-18 season.
In 145 Premier League appearances, the Portuguese has 15 goals and eight assists. Neves’ positioning is the strength of his game. Furthermore, he is a player who can prompt attacks from deep in midfield and he has got most of his goals from near the edge of the box, proving the great shot he has got on him.
Since Phillipe Coutinho’s departure from Liverpool, the number of goal contributions from midfield has reduced emphatically. A player like Neves can bring about a change to that, with his offensive style of play from a defensive position.
The Reds haven’t found an ideal successor for Gini Wijnaldum since his departure from Anfield after the 2020-21 season. The Dutchman also has not had a good time since he left Liverpool, struggling for game-time at Paris Saint-Germain and was shipped on loan to AS Roma.
With Liverpool having identified the 25-year-old as a potential signing, it is essential for the Reds to move as soon as possible as the transfer window is also drawing towards a close.
