Five midfielders Liverpool should look to sign this summer
After manager Jurgen Klopp talked about wanting to sign a midfielder before the Bournemouth game after maintaining that the squad depth is enough for Liverpool to compete, we look at five midfielders Liverpool should look to sign this summer.
Frenkie de Jong
The Dutchman has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou for the entirety of this summer. He was earlier linked to Manchester United, but the deal fell through due to delays in negotiations. And very recently, the 25-year-old was linked to Liverpool as well.
De Jong is a player who likes to carry the ball and see open spaces for the wingers to explore. Excellent work rate defensively as well acts like icing on the cake. He might be available for a rebated price due to Barca’s financial struggles presently. The former Ajax man can add a creative spark to Liverpool’s midfield in Thiago Alcantara’s absence.
Youri Tielemans
The Belgian has been linked with a move to Liverpool for the last three transfer windows. The 25-year-old’s contract at Leicester expires in 2023. Tielemans’ style of play can especially suit the Reds as he can play anywhere in a midfield 3.
His long passing skills and a great shot can see him play in an advanced midfield role as well. Furthermore, his Premier League experience can come in handy as well. Altogether, he got seven goals and five assists from 50 appearances last season.
Konrad Laimer
The 25-year-old Austrian has a contract lasting until 2023 at RB Leipzig. Maybe a perfect suit for Jurgen Klopp’s Gegenpress, Laimer is an aggressive player who has high tackle success rates.
A key strength of Laimer’s is his ability to maintain possession of the ball for long periods. He can prove to be a good fit for Klopp’s team and might be a like-to-like replacement for Gini Wijnaldum, for whom the Reds haven’t found a replacement since he departed the club two seasons ago.
Ismael Bennacer
The France-born Algerian midfielder has a long career ahead of him at only 24. He can play in a two-man midfield pivot and as the deepest playmaker in a three-man midfield as well. His contract at Italian giants AC Milan expires in 2023, and he is yet to sign a contract extension.
Regardless, he had a wonderful season at the Rossoneri, having played a crucial role in their title charge. Besides, Bennacer is left-footed which adds a different dynamic to the midfield by adding a few extra passing lanes. PS: Bennacer is the author’s preferred signing.
Houssem Aouar
Despite his versatility as an attacking midfielder, Aouar can play anywhere along the midfield line. A technically sound player, he is chiefly known for his calmness with the ball and excellent decision-making. In 45 appearances for the French club last season, he accumulated eight goals and four assists.

The one common thing among these players is they are not very injury prone. All things considered, Liverpool need to sign midfielders who tend to not get injured very often as we have suffered enough in the past with the threat of injury looming over our players.
