Virgil van Dijk talks about the current midfield Liverpool situation
Speaking after the thumping 9-0 win over AFC Bournemouth (h/t This is Anfield), Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk spoke about the Reds’ midfield situation, and he would receive with open arms the addition of a new midfielder.
Talking about Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho’s role in the win against the Cherries, he spoke about how adding a new midfielder to Liverpool’s ranks would not “stop them from progressing”.
In all of Liverpool’s games before the Bournemouth fixture, the Reds’ midfield was left completely exposed. This was especially the case in the Manchester United game at Old Trafford wherein 36-year-old James Milner started a very important derby game for the Merseysiders. Even though Milly is a club hero, it is wise to think of the long-term and get on the team some fresh legs.
“Midfielders are the engine of our team, they win so many balls for us. They are the engine of our team. We need a lot of midfielders.”
Liverpool’s midfield has two towering issues presently. Primarily, the injury crisis the club is going through right now. Secondly, an ageing midfield. This summer window, the Reds have signed only one midfielder in Fabio Carvalho.
Several midfielders including Frenkie de Jong and Ruben Neves are subject to a Liverpool move this summer. A starter midfielder like these two should solve the club’s problems by a major chunk. Apart from Fabinho, Liverpool tends to change their midfield combination and for that, they need multiple options.
“You see the amount of games we play, we rotate a lot in midfield apart from Fab I think. We need everyone”
Van Dijk talked about the number of games Liverpool could play throughout the season and the need for some reinforcements to tackle fatigue. With the World Cup also scheduled later this year, the need for multiple options in midfield echoes louder.
With the transfer window also closing soon. Liverpool needs to assess their options and pick the most suitable of the available choices in the transfer market.

Virgil’s calls for a new midfielder come at the right time, and maybe a call for a new player from within the club might make the management go out there and buy a player before the conclusion of the transfer window.
