Transfer News: Nathaniel Phillips is likely to stay at Liverpool this summer

According to GOAL’s Neil Jones (h/t This is Anfield), Liverpool centre-back Nathaniel Phillips is likely to stay at the club this summer. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club this summer.

Bournemouth, where he spent the second half of last season, are interested in the defender. Along with the Cherries, Burnley and Fulham are also said to be interested in the centre-back.

However, with Sepp van den Berg leaving on loan, Jurgen Klopp may keep the English centre-back at the club.

Phillips staying back would make him the fifth-choice centre-back for the club. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 25-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Bournemouth. There he had a very successful loan spell which ended in helping the Cherries gain promotion to the Premier League.

A regular there, the Englishman prefers to play regularly this season too rather than be a fifth-choice defender. But, Klopp will know the importance of squad depth for the long season ahead and may block any move for the centre-back.

Should the 25-year-old force a move in the last two days of the transfer window, the Liverpool manager would then likely have to look for a fifth-choice from the academy. But this is something that is highly unlikely to happen.

Only two days remain before the transfer window slams shut. Klopp will be wise to have a talk with the defender and convince him to stay. If he leaves, and any unforeseen injuries happen, it could become a defensive nightmare for the club.
