Speaking after Liverpool beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Anfield, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Jordan Henderson suffered a hamstring issue (h/t the Athletic) [Subscription Required].
The England international had a poor game against the Toons, and he failed to impress fans yet again after an uninspired display on Wednesday night. It was arguably a weak clearance from him and failure to track Alexander Isak after that which led to Newcastle’s opening goal.
The Reds equalised through Roberto Firmino in the 61st minute. Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were both hooked 10 minutes later for Fabio Carvalho and James Milner to come on.
Hendo was surprisingly taking a long time to come off, much to the frustration of some LFC fans who were desperate to get on with the game with the score tied at 1-1.
The former Fulham international, who turned 20 earlier this week, scored the winner in the eighth minute of stoppage time to send the Anfield faithful into a frenzy.
The joy was cut down to some extent after news of Hendo’s injury. Klopp said
:“We have another problem with Hendo. He felt his hamstring. That obviously is not helpful.”
Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have already been missing games due to fitness issues of their own. Hendo seems to be another name added to the list if his scans don’t yield a positive result on Thursday.
The Reds are scheduled to take on Everton in a Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on September 3. Harvey Elliott and Carvalho can start alongside Fabinho but the two ex-wingers aren’t really physical and if started together, they could struggle when the team is not in possession.
