Player News: Liverpool set to offer new contract to Naby Keita

According to the Mirror (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are set to offer a new contract to talented Guinean midfielder Naby Keita despite there being speculation about his future at Anfield.

The 27-year-old midfielder has continually been linked with an exit from the club throughout this summer, with Keita supposedly not being happy with the amount of game time that he is receiving with the Reds.

Keita joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2018. He was signed with huge expectations but the talented midfielder’s time at Anfield has been kind of mixed. He has struggled with injuries which have prevented him from getting into a rhythm.

A player who has come through the ranks of the RB clubs, Keita is a unique midfielder. He has the attributes of being one of the best box-to-box midfielders that Liverpool have but it is not regularly that we see the quality.

Keita has played 117 times for the Reds in his career until now scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists across all competitions. The numbers could have been much better had Keita played much more.

The Guinean international has a contract with the Reds until 2023 (Transfermarkt). With less than 12 months before his contract ends, Liverpool are interested in offering the midfielder a new deal.

The Reds have had a lot of issues in midfield this season, with a number of players injured including Naby Keita. Liverpool even signed Arthur Melo on deadline day to help alleviate the injury issues.

Even otherwise, Liverpool need a midfield revamp. They need to improve the quality of the midfield and will want to make a statement signing next summer. That said, they will have to shift out some of the midfielders from the squad.

It remains to be seen how the Keita situation develops. He certainly divides opinions among the Liverpool fans but there is no denying that when fit, he is a force to reckon with.
