Liverpool icon Dirk Kuyt predicts easy Liverpool win vs Ajax
Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt believes that Ajax could “lose control” playing at a full-capacity Anfield and thinks that it is just a matter of time before Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp sets things straight back again (h/t The Mirror).
The Reds have had a poor start to their new campaign as Liverpool have just nine points from a possible 18 and are currently in the seventh position in the league table. In the UEFA Champions League as well, Napoli battered the Liverpool midfield and backline, scoring four goals past the Merseysiders.
Even during these turbulent times at the club, former Red Dirk Kuyt believes that Liverpool can get right back on track starting their game against Ajax. The Dutchman believes that Anfield will create a tough atmosphere for Ajax. Being an icon at Feyenoord, perhaps he already doesn’t fancy Ajax too much.
“If the club is having a bad time, like this period, the crowd often creates an atmosphere of invincibility. I would be very surprised if Ajax can play well against Liverpool under that intense pressure.”
“Liverpool have trouble with teams who play with fast attackers on the counter. I don’t see Ajax adapting in that way… I think of a 3-1 or 4-2 win for Liverpool.”
According to Kuyt, gaffer Jurgen Klopp is still seeking the right mix in attack following the departure of Sadio Mane. The Senegalese played an extremely important role in Liverpool’s success over the years and it is not easy for any club to replace a player of that calibre.
Complicated times for the Midfield
Moreover, the midfield crisis is something Liverpool have had to face for the past few weeks. Apart from Harvey Elliott, Fabinho and James Milner, all of the midfielders have been sidelined at least once owing to injury.
Very recently, due to Jordan Henderson’s hamstring injury vs Newcastle United, Liverpool signed Arthur Melo from Juventus on loan to tackle the injury scare. Fatigue is a problem the Reds have to solve as well.
Liverpool played all possible games last season, and the side effects are starting to show now. Here is where Kuyt’s comments come into the picture. Liverpool’s fans are known all over Europe for their intimidating support.
Anfield can push the Reds to get through the toughest of situations. The Dutchman has experienced the might of the Kop multiple times in the past when he donned our famous colours.
“At Anfield, I have seen even the greatest teams with the most experienced top players lose the plot. As a Liverpool player, you’re boosted by the noise.”
With Liverpool’s home crowd like no other, that gives them an extra edge to try and go the extra step. If that does not happen, it is extremely difficult for Liverpool to bounce back and be a threat to win the trophy.
