Liverpool are ready to lose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to land Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz

According to Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have reportedly identified Aston Villa’s Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz as a transfer target and could potentially let go of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in a player plus cash deal for the 24-year-old.

The Englishman hasn’t featured for the Reds yet this season after he suffered an injury against Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly. His time at Anfield has been extremely frustrating due to injuries and inconsistent performances. Last season, the former Southampton midfielder played 29 games and secured three goals and three assists.

Steven Gerrard is supposedly a big fan of the ex-Arsenal midfielder and there might be a chance of a player plus cash deal going through as early as December.

Douglas Luiz and Liverpool

Luiz also has entered the final year of his contract, and it would make sense for Liverpool to approach Villa for him. The 24-year-old has been very important for the Midlands outfit and has been a pivot in Steven Gerrard’s team.

The Reds, on deadline day, signed Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus amidst rumours of Liverpool going in for Luiz as well. The Brazilian could make a good fit in Liverpool, being capable of multiple midfield roles as well as his preferred number 6 position.

For the longest time, Fabinho has not had a competition to his throne at that position, but with a national team friend challenging him for the spot, it might be a good healthy battle to see. Proven in the Premier League as well, the only hindrance which might come the Reds’ way might be the valuation.

Parting ways with an injury-prone player for someone who is probably more skilful and does not seem like a bad option for the Reds. But all things said, everything right now is just pure speculation and it is yet to be seen whether Liverpool will indeed move for the Brazilian.

With a bunch of contracts expiring next summer, Liverpool are almost certain to sign new midfielders come the summer of 2023. Whether Luiz would be one of those is yet to be seen.
