Rafael van der Vaart singles out Liverpool trio Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Joe Gomez
Former Dutch International Rafael van der Vaart is known for his blunt observations with his latest one concerning Liverpool ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash against the Dutchman’s former club Ajax.
Speaking to the Dutch TV programme Rondo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Rafael van der Vaart claimed that Liverpool are a mediocre side if their key players go missing and emphasised three particular players.
“We suddenly think Jordan Henderson is a crazy player. That’s just a very normal player. James Milner is also a very normal player. Joe Gomez is also a very normal player.
Although Van Der Vaart’s criticisms might be seen as harsh, evidence from the first few games and especially this season proves he is not wrong in his assessment.
James Milner has always been an amazing squad player and has performed his duty whenever called upon. However, if there are injuries to key players in midfield, he is not someone who can act as a reliable deputy for the entirety of the game.
Jordan Henderson is known for his impressive leadership qualities and in fairness have led the team to one of the strongest eras of Liverpool in the past decade.
However, as has been the criticism from many supporters, Henderson does not offer much in midfield when compared to other starters in Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita who all provide a different variety to the midfield.
Same issue goes for defender Joe Gomes, who after a bright start to his Liverpool career, has seen Joel Matip and Ibrahime Konate being preferred more with Virgil Van Dijk and the player has not really been able to cement a starting position for himself in the club as well as national level.
Liverpool’s successes of the past can be summarised down to exceptional performances by key players in Mohammad Salah, Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson and a few other first team starters.
It should also be noted that in no way are we disregarding the dedication and determination shown by the three players in question.

However, Henderson and Milner are showing signs of age catching up to them while Joe Gomez has not really been able to break away into a world class talent.
Hence, it would be imperative on the board and manager to make sure that able substitutes are lined up and reinforcements are in order for us to maintain our dominance in Europe.
