Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool fans will respect a minute’s silence for Queen Elizabeth II

Speaking ahead of the UEFA Champions League game against Ajax (h/t The Athletic,) [Subscription Required] Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool supporters will show their respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The long-standing monarch died at the age of 96 and there will be an official state funeral expected in the coming week amid speculations that the Premier League fixtures of certain teams, which include Liverpool.

However, UEFA midweek fixtures are expected to go ahead with Liverpool facing Eredivisie champions Ajax and the club has requested a minute’s silence before the kick-off to pay respect to the Queen.

Klopp believes it is the right thing to do and the fans will be respectful of the gesture.

“I don’t think that our people need any kind of advice from me about showing respect. There are plenty of examples where people showed exactly the right kind of respect. For me, it’s clear. That’s what we have to do.”

Klopp is correct in his comments. Liverpool fans are sensible enough to honour the minute’s silence and they are well aware of how to show their respect.

The focus, from kick-off, will shift to the task at hand of winning the game against the Dutch side. Of course, the fixture will be a better watch for everyone after both sets of fans are cordial in their response to the respects being shown to Her Majesty The Queen, so the only topic that remains for discussion is the football being played.

Liverpool had a disastrous start to their European campaign with a 4-1 loss to Italian side Napoli with Klopp cementing the game as the worst of his Liverpool career.

There has been a week off since the game against Napoli and this would have done wonders for the manager and players to critically analyse the shortcomings and look for a way to improve their form.

Ajax, like Napoli, have started the season tremendously well and always are a strong side to face in the Champions League, hence in no way would it be an easy task.

Liverpool are in a rather tough group with Napoli, Ajax and Rangers and a victory in midweek is essential to kickstart our European campaign and regain the form.
