Liverpool are interested in Manchester United transfer target Joao Gomes
According to journalist Julio Miguel Neto via Twitter (h/t Liverpool Echo), Premier League giants Liverpool are plotting a January move for Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes.
The Reds failed to bring in a top-tier addition to their midfield roster this summer. Signing Arthur Melo on loan appears to be more of a short-term fix and it is imperative that the club looks to add to their options in the coming windows.
The same thought appears to be on the minds of the Anfield decision makers with Gomes on their radar. The 21-year-old has been sensational for Flamengo and has seen his reputation soar.
As per the report, Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of the player and is keen to bring him to Anfield. Should a January bid fail, there is every chance to believe that Liverpool will be keen to see it through next summer.
It might not be straightforward with both Manchester United and Atletico Madrid also keeping tabs. A defensive midfielder who is also technically proficient, he would make for an invaluable addition to the Reds’ squad.
Gomes’s ability to not just win the ball back but also dribble forward with it makes him an ideal prospect for Klopp’s all-action system. This lack of dynamism in the middle of the park is apparent, especially when Thiago Alcantara is absent.
At 21, Gomes is of the right age to not just make the next step in his career but also develop further as a player. He has his best years still ahead of him and could develop into a mainstay in Klopp’s midfield for years to come.
Regardless of whether the Reds bring in Gomes, they should do everything in their power to land Jude Bellingham. A once-in-a-generation player, one would not begrudge the Merseysiders’ should they go on to land the Borussia Dortmund sensation.

Liverpool cannot afford to leave their midfield shorn of fresh additions in the coming windows. Landing Gomes would be a proper step in the right direction for Klopp’s rebuild.
