Harvey Elliott thanks Liverpool fans for their support against Ajax Amsterdam

19-year-old Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott took to his post-match interview with the club’s official website to thank the fans for “backing the players” throughout the game against Ajax Amsterdam.

The Reds won 2-1 against the Dutch outfit thanks to a late Joel Matip header in the 89th minute. It was a hard-fought win and the performance in this game was much better than in the previous games leading up to this fixture.

A Mohamed Salah goal gave the Reds a lead as early as before the 20-minute mark in the game, but a Mohamed Kudus goal within 10 minutes of the first one saw the scores level. The Reds left it late to take the lead once again from a beautiful set-piece delivered into the box by Kostas Tsimikas.

Matip was quick to latch on to it. The ball barely crossed the goal line, but it was enough to seal the three points for the Reds on the night. Hopefully, this gives the Reds the momentum to push forward.

Harvey Elliott speaks about the game

Harvey played 66 minutes of the game but looked a bit off-colour given his recent form over the last few weeks. In an interview with the club’s website after the game, he said that the players showed “great fight and desire” to change the current wave for the Reds.

“I’m very proud of the boys and very thankful for the fans for backing us throughout the whole game and giving us the support we need. I’m just very thankful we came away with the win.”

The Reds’ #19 took the chance to thank the fans for “backing” the players throughout the game. Anfield was in full roar, as usual proceedings on the first UCL night of the season at the stadium.

With the “fight and desire” the players showed on the night, this might be a change in proceedings for Liverpool and an attempt to resurrect the slow and shaky start to the season. Diogo Jota and Thiago’s importance to the team was made well and clear in this game after the pair returned to the starting XI after being sidelined due to injury.

Additionally, Mohamed Salah ended his goal drought in the competition and gave the fans something to cheer about as well.

This was Liverpool’s first win in the Champions League this season, after a very harsh thumping received by Napoli wherein the Reds lost 4-1.

The only issue is Liverpool leaving it too late to take control of the game, which might not necessarily result in a positive result for the Reds. Hence, Liverpool should look to put an end to the game as quickly as possible, making it less stressful for themselves.
