Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool are yet to make their move for Joao Gomes

According to the reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano, in his column for The Caught Offside has revealed that Liverpool are yet to make a move to land Flamengo midfielder Joao Santos.

The 21-year-old is one of the rising names in Brazilian football and is attracting attention from Europe. Liverpool, in particular, are in need of adding midfield reinforcements and are keeping a close watch on Gomes.

Romano confirms that Liverpool are interested in the player and have sent scouts to watch him. That is as far as the Reds’ interest goes and they are yet to follow it up with anything more concrete.

“Liverpool have monitored Gomes with their scouts as many other top European clubs did, at the moment there’s nothing else to this story, no official bid or negotiation.”

Given that there are other clubs also in the fray, it is in our best interests to line up the player as quickly as possible. The last thing we need is for our rivals to play spoilsport and beat us to the punch.

Still young, Gomes has much to learn before he is ready to meet the demands at Anfield. Romano has a good impression of the player but believes he needs to get better before potentially moving to Merseyside.

“I think he’s a very good player but he needs some steps before being ready for Liverpool level.”

The Reds need to reinforce their midfield on an urgent basis next summer. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner are all above 30 while Fabinho looks burnt out. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have struggled with injuries while Curtis Jones has failed to develop as expected.

It is imperative that we look at the big picture. Gomes would be an excellent addition and at 21 is a long-term addition to the Reds’ roster. Whether the club’s scouts have seen enough of the Brazilian star for the club to go all in remains to be seen.

Liverpool are not averse to getting in the right player even before they are up to speed. The likes of Andrew Robertson and Fabinho both spent a spell on the sidelines before being integrated into the club’s first XI.

The same appears to be happening with Darwin Nunez this season. Gomes certainly needs to be brought up to speed and bringing him one early will aid the club to do just that.
