Paddy Kenny: Latest injury a ‘devastating’ setback for Liverpool star Curtis Jones

Curtis Jones has missed most games this season. The 21-year-old’s only mention in league games this season came in the game against Newcastle United wherein he remained benched for the entire game. The last time he featured for the Reds was in the FA Community Shield Finals against Manchester City in July.

The Liverpool academy graduate saw himself sidelined in two spells. A stress reaction in the tibia saw him sit out initially. A recurrence of the same injury saw him frustratedly sit out again, but hopefully not for long on this occasion. Jurgen Klopp has not provided an exact date for Jones’ return from the injury layoff.

Curtis will obviously not be happy with his situation and he would be working toward getting his fitness on track. Starts for the 21-year-old could hardly stand guaranteed even when he returns. With Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho making strong cases for themselves while Curtis was out, it would not be the easiest of tasks to break into the line-up. Moreover, summer signing Arthur Melo would be ready to go all guns blazing post the international break as well.

Former Leeds United goalie Paddy Kenny via Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo) is of the belief that Jones’ “devastating blow” is a barricade for him to showcase his talent and skill. By the time Curtis is back from injury, most of the current lot who stand sidelined presently also should see their way back into the fray.

“The latest injury is a devastating new blow for Curtis Jones. He will know that he could have missed a golden opportunity to establish himself. Liverpool have been decimated in midfield, with Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain out all season so far, Henderson out with a hamstring injury and Thiago only just back. But, after the international break, Klopp will not be short of options.”

Tough times for Jones

Curtis has played 75 times for the senior team scoring on eight occasions and assisting ten more. Having been coached by Steven Gerrard at the club’s age-group levels, Jones showed signs of a bright future at the academy. His time with the first team though has been frustrating citing his availability.

Maybe his style of play, or anything it could be, Jones has been very injury prone in the recent seasons. His inconsistent performances have been a bit frustrating. But given his age, a certain amount of leeway could be afforded.

With Thiago and Fabinho guaranteed starters subject to form and fitness, only one spot is up for grabs in the midfield. With Harvey Elliott going through a purple patch in terms of form, it is hard to see beyond those three at the moment.

At times when the situation demands a squad rotation, which will be the case more often than not this season given the World Cup later this year, it opens up opportunities for Curtis and others to step up.

It is yet to be seen whether Curtis could be fit for the game against Brighton and Hove Albion on 1 October. That fixture will be the next time the Reds’ will be in action after the international break.
