Transfer News: Liverpool target Ousmane Dembele has a £42m release clause in his contract
Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele has a £42 million release clause in his current contract amid Liverpool interest. This is according to French paper L’Equipe (h/t Liverpool Echo).
The Reds are among the clubs linked with making a move for the 25-year-old. The winger signed a new two-year deal in the summer, but the release clause would catch the attention of teams that have been interested in the former Borussia Dortmund winger.
It looked very likely that the French international would become a free agent this summer, but he ultimately signed a new deal. However, there is still hope for the Merseyside club to land the winger.
Dembele moved to the Spanish city in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund for a whopping £135.5 million. But there could be arguments about whether he has lived up to that fee or not.
The 25-year-old has made a total of 158 appearances for the Blaugrana in all competitions, scoring 34 goals and assisting another 38. The World Cup winner has also won two La Liga titles with the club.
But there is one problem with the winger. He is very injury prone. The 25-year-old has missed so much in his career due to injuries. And this could be a hindrance to signing him.
Mohamed Salah has been struggling this season. With Luis Diaz almost single-handedly leading the Reds attack, the Colombian could do with some help. Dembele makes the perfect candidate for that. His pace is unmatched, while the winger can be deployed in multiple positions up front.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool is willing to activate his clause this January or maybe next summer. But, they definitely won’t be alone in their pursuit. If Jurgen Klopp wants the man, it will be wise for him to make a move fast.
