Flamengo vice-president Marcos Braz has shut down the recent rumours about Joao Gomes amid Liverpool interest.

The Brazilian midfielder has been linked with a move to Merseyside of late. The 21-year-old himself admitted that a move to Anfield was something that he ‘dreams’ of.

However, he recently agreed to a contract extension with his current side that will keep him at the club till 2027.

Now, Flamengo’s vice-president has shut down the rumours linking the player with a move to England. Speaking to ESPN (h/t Liverpool Echo), Braz explained the noise around the midfielder.

“It was said that there was some discomfort, a relationship problem. The relationship with João Gomes was always the best possible, speaking personally and as vice president of the football department. There was no proposal for João Gomes, there was no consultation for him. o, it’s a lot of lies that have been propagated about João Gomes since the beginning of these renewal issues.”

Liverpool are in need of a midfielder. Naby Keita, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are very injury prone. Jurgen Klopp cannot rely on them to be fit for every game. Jordan Henderson and James Milner, meanwhile, are way past their best years.

Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott have stepped up whenever needed, but another young midfielder is needed with defensive intuitions. Gomes fits such a bill perfectly.

But the midfielder will not come easy. He has just signed a new contract at his current club. To pursue the Brazilian side to sell one of their talented players could require the Reds to splash some serious money.
