International Watch: Liverpool stars Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz turn up for their countries

September 24th saw two Liverpool stars play for their respective nations. Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz featured in Portugal and Colombia’s victories against the Czech Republic and Guatemala respectively.

Liverpool’s #20 came off the bench in the 67th minute replacing Rafael Leao. Portugal were already leading the Czechs 3-0 at that point, which would not have pleased the home fans at Sinobo Stadium in Prague. Jota scored a clinical header in the 82nd minute from a Cristiano Ronaldo-headed attempt at goal.

For the major part of the opening spell of the season, Jota saw himself sidelined due to a recurrence of a hamstring injury. Resultantly, he did not feature for the Reds throughout the pre-season and his first appearance post his return was the brief 10-minute spell against Everton at Goodison Park.

Elsewhere in New Jersey at the Red Bull Arena, Colombia won 4-1 against Guatemala. Luis Diaz featured for Los Cafeteros in their win and saw himself replaced after 64 minutes. His team was leading 2-0 when Rafael Borre came on for Diaz.

The former FC Porto winger has been in sublime form for Liverpool this season, scoring four goals from nine appearances this season.

More Reds were in action last week, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice for Egypt vs Niger. Darwin Nunez featured for Uruguay in their loss against Iran and Alisson and Fabinho played for Brazil elsewhere against Ghana.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson were on the bench in England’s loss to Italy. The Three Lions play Germany tomorrow, and one could expect the duo to feature at Wembley given they missed out on playing against Roberto Mancini’s squad.

These stars will feature for the club next on 1st October, against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League. Hopefully, the good form for their nation carries on for Liverpool as well.

Jota’s form is particularly coming at a time for the Reds when they could use it the most. Darwin Nunez could use a few more weeks to settle down as a regular starter while Mohamed Salah, who may have scored two for Egypt recently, hasn’t been at his best in Liverpool red.
