Former PL striker labels Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez as worst summer signing in 2022

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is the worst summer signing

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT via Twitter, Gabby Agbonlahor said that Darwin Nunez is the worst signing this summer. The former Aston Villa striker also added that Nunez’s first touch is not upto the mark.

Darwin has not had the most ideal start to life in the Premier League and is struggling for form and consistency. He scored a goal against Manchester City in his first competitive game against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield Final.

In Liverpool’s first league game, Darwin scored a goal and also got an assist against Fulham. Since then, everything has been downhill as he received a red card against Crystal Palace for violent conduct subsequently missing three games.

Even since his return, he has not been playing upto the mark and has certainly not lived up to the hype surrounding his arrival to Anfield for a potential club-record transfer fee of £85m.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has been critical of Nunez’s performances and has also dubbed him “the worst summer signing” this season. Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, he also named Gabriel Jesus as the best transfer.

“When I look at Nunez, even his first touch doesn’t look great. We were quick to call (Romelu) Lukaku Timberland boots when that was trending on Twitter when he was having bad touches in games but Nunez looks like he has two pairs of Timberlands on.”

As seen before, adjusting to the Premier League is not the easiest of tasks for any player. Not everyone is Luis Diaz, who transitioned from the Portuguese league to the Premier League like it was child’s play.

Two of Liverpool’s current mainstays, Andrew Robertson and Fabinho also waited long before adjusting to life in the Premier League. Hence, Nunez could be cut some slack as this is just his first season in the English league.

With still a major chunk of the season yet to occur, Nunez still has the opportunity to redeem himself and make a case for himself in the eyes of the Kop. The price tag and his prior season at Benfica have put a lot of pressure on the young guy but it is naive and illogical to judge him after just a few weeks into his debut season in England.
