Liverpool willing to break the bank for 21-year-old Brazilian midfield star

Liverpool are willing to pay the same amount as they did for Naby Keita for Joao Gomes

According to Sport (h/t The Express), Liverpool are ‘willing’ to pay the same price as they did for Naby Keita in 2018 for their rumoured transfer target Joao Gomes of Flamengo.

The Brazilian playmaker also sees himself linked to Real Madrid. This could be one of the reasons why Liverpool are so adamant in their interest in the player and are making their interest in the player so much more accelerated.

It is understandable from the report that Liverpool are ready to part ways with at least £52m

for Joao Gomes, that being the amount the Reds gave up back in 2018 to secure the services of Naby Keita.

From Flamengo to Merseyside

The Brazilian has an active release clause worth £53m

. Liverpool could choose to trigger that clause as early as the January transfer window to help Gomes settle down and ease him slowly into the squad ahead of the 2023-23 season.

With Real Madrid also on the lookout for the defensive midfielder, it is very crucial for the Reds to come to a decision with Gomes as the point of discussion. If the interest is genuine and the scouts see something in the player, the Reds should try and not leave any stone unturned in luring the player to Anfield instead of Santiago Bernabeu

Also included in the report is the fact that Los Blancos are unwilling to pay the whole price for the 21-year-old, unlike Liverpool, who for a change are ready to pay up for a midfielder. In case he moves to Liverpool, he would be the fifth Brazilian apart from Roberto Firmino, Alisson, Fabinho and Arthur Melo in the squad. Also giving him company would be fellow South Americans Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

The midfielder is more likely to move to Anfield given his statements about Liverpool in the past, saying that the Merseyside club is one which he would ‘definitely play for’ and has the ‘greatest desire’ to.
