Liverpool superstar left out of matchday squad for national team vs Germany

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold left out of matchday squad vs Germany by Gareth Southgate

After sitting on the bench for the entire game in England’s 1-0 loss against Italy at the San Siro, Trent Alexander-Arnold sees himself out of the matchday squad against Germany on 26th September (h/t Liverpool Echo).

Alongside the Liverpool right-back, Jack Grealish, Jarrod Bowen, Fikayo Tomori and James Ward-Prowse also sit out of the matchday squad. The Manchester City winger sees himself out due to suspension. Trent was expected to feature in the game after he sat out vs Italy.

Moreover, former England striker Gary Lineker was not happy with Southgate’s decision to bench the 23-year-old right-back at the San Siro. Trent has not had an easy run with the England team. His last 90 minutes for The Three Lions came against San Marino in the World Cup Qualification Round for Europe back in November.

Since his debut in June 2018, Trent has featured in only 14 games as a starter from a possible 36. Southgate explained to The Mirror his decision of letting the right-back out of his squad saying the following.

“I don’t see risks. You can have a style of play and a way of playing, and a balance to the team, that… at Liverpool they find a way of playing that brings the best out of his attributes and that’s what we’re all trying to do with every team”

With Reece James given the preference over Alexander-Arnold, the latter’s future with England is on tenterhooks. Southgate’s decision to not play Trent in any of the games prior to the World Cup raises doubts over his selection for the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

There are no international breaks for a while post this one. And the England manager’s choice of letting Trent go would mean that the full-back is not given a choice prior to the major event in November.

Nevertheless, less action for Trent means fewer chances of injury on international duty. Eventually, benefitting Liverpool. England, after their relegation from their UEFA Nations League group, will play Iran in their first matchday of the World Cup.
