Reds target Konrad Laimer makes Liverpool claim after transfer interest
RB Leipzig’s Austrian midfielder Konrad Laimer, who was subject to a move to Liverpool earlier in the transfer window said in an interview with the German publication BILD (h/t Liverpool Echo) that he had always been a fan of the Merseysiders.
The 25-year-old was linked to Liverpool in the late weeks of the transfer window. Injuries to midfielders like Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones and Jordan Henderson almost forced Liverpool to dip into the market for a midfielder.
However, Liverpool’s interest was during the final few stages of the transfer window after a mini-injury crisis of sorts. RB Leipzig understandably did not want to lose one of their most important players so late in the window and the Reds signed Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus on deadline day.
Laimer admitted in the interview that he has always been a fan of the Merseyside giants. Whether the Reds will return for him in upcoming windows remains to be seen.
“I’m generally a football fan. I generally like watching the Premier League. I’ve always been a Liverpool fan. When you’re associated with clubs like this, there’s a certain pride. But I’m more the guy who talks to people and needs a feeling that everything fits together.”
Laimer at Liverpool?
Laimer’s contract runs down next summer, and Leipzig could potentially lose out on the chance to cash in on the Austrian. With that being a point of discussion, two of Liverpool’s transfer targets Laimer and Douglas Luiz could be available for free.
The former Salzburg midfielder is also on the radar of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. It will be interesting to see how this transfer saga turns out given Liverpool also have an eye on Jude Bellingham.
With his contract running down next summer, interested clubs could hold talks with Laimer’s representatives from January 1 and try to negotiate deals as soon as possible. With an ageing squad at Liverpool’s disposal, it is almost certain that the Reds will look to bolster their midfield.
