Harry Redknapp would have Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England World Cup squad
Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp would include Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England World Cup squad. However, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur boss does not see the 23-year-old play at right-back.
In the last few weeks, Trent has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism for his defensive displays. And even though he was called up to the Three Lions’ setup during the international break, the 23-year-old did not play.
Subsequently, Trent’s place in the England squad for Qatar has been in question. However, speaking to talkSPORT on YoutTube (h/t Express), Redknapp has no doubts about the right-back’s place in the national side. But he would play the 23-year-old in other positions.
“I still think I would have him in the [World Cup] squad. I would still take him. But, we are very strong at right-back, for sure”
“But he would be in my squad. He could even play in different positions. He has the ability to play forward, play central [midfield] or wide in front of the right-back.”
Gareth Southgate has the pick of the bunch when it comes to options for the right-back spot. Chelsea’s Reece Jame, Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier are all available.
Most Reds fans would concede that the players England possess at full-back are better defensively compared to Trent. The Liverpool star has been found wanting in the backline for the Merseysiders.
However, going forward, Trent offers a lot. The 23-year-old has been up there with the best when it comes to the assists chart in the Premier League. The England international is a unique talent in the final third.
But Southgate does not seem to fancy Trent. He has not played a significant role for the Three Lions over the years. The 23-year-old has only 17 caps for the national side, having made his debut in 2018.
Since breaking out in the 2017/18 season, Trent has won every major title under Jurgen Klopp. However, even with everything the 23-year-old has achieved, there are still some things that the right-back can evidently improve.
