Liverpool and Manchester City to in contention to sign Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes
Sunday Times via the Daily Express (h/t Liverpool Echo) claim that Liverpool and their Premier League rivals Manchester City will ‘battle it out’ for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes next summer.
Liverpool had a lot of interest in the Portuguese midfielder last summer and it is said that the player was himself delaying the move to Wolves in hopes that Jurgen Klopp and co will make an approach for him. That didn’t happen.
A £42m deal saw him make the switch from Sporting CP to the Molineux in the West Midlands. With the Reds needing a midfielder, Liverpool eventually signed Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus on deadline day.
Liverpool are now set to battle with Manchester City in their pursuit to land the midfielder and ensure that he plays for the Merseysiders next season. He is someone the recruitment team at the AXA Training Centre knows well due to their scouting.

Plus if he is seen as a transfer target, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them make a move for the player next summer. Liverpool’s problems in midfield are not something that has come up just this season and it would be wise of the Reds to get onboard a midfielder or two next summer.
In a pretty below-average season for Wolves, Nunes has been playing quite sharp and has looked a notch above his teammates. Moreover, with two midfielders, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, running out of contract at Merseyside in 2023, it would be good to see a player as capable as Nunes make the switch to the Reds.
With Manchester City’s apparent interest in the player, any negotiations will require swift action as quickly as possible. That will negate interests from any other club and secure the deal as soon as possible.

Finally, with Liverpool also looking to sign Jude Bellingham in 2023, the idea of a midfield with the Englishman and Nunes in theory sounds much like an upgrade to the ageing midfield at the Reds’ disposal presently.
