Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp sends Darwin Nunez message after positive Rangers outing
Liverpool had a new look to their attack against Glasgow Rangers in their UEFA Champions League game on Tuesday night. With Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp changing things upfront, it gave Darwin Nunez a free role up front, playing as the striker in a new 4-2-3-1 formation.
Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were on the wings and Diogo Jota played the role of an attacking midfielder. A change to the usual 4-3-3 formation Liverpool usually plays eventually fetched the Reds their victory against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side. Darwin had a good game and troubled the Glasgow outfit’s backline.
Rangers’ goalkeeper Allan McGregor had one of his best games and denied Nunez thrice in the game. Darwin is still to score his first Anfield goal for Liverpool, but his performance was much improved than earlier. According to the Liverpool Echo, the gaffer Jurgen Klopp also highlighted the same.
“We can see that. The way the boys up front moved together was extremely, extremely good for only one session working on it, to be honest. You saw how good a striker he is to be constantly in those situations. Everybody saw tonight that this will happen. So all good.”
Nunez’s Form
Following his much-hyped move from SL Benfica to the Reds earlier in the summer for a potentially club-record fee of £85m, fans would have expected Darwin to perform better than he had so far in the season. Moreover, the fact that he missed a bunch of games in the season due to suspension also was not the most exciting of facts.
Of course, he got off to a slow start, but this game against the Rangers promises a change in his approach to the game and as per Klopp, goals for Nunez will all come in their due course. With Roberto Firmino in sublime form and Diogo Jota putting in the hard yards as well, Nunez has tough competition for the final spot on the playing XI.
The ultimate test for Darwin though will be how he fares in the Premier League. Until now, he has had a tough transition to the English game, but hopefully, he will get going soon.
