Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp opted to alter his favoured 4-3-3 formation, switching to a 4-2-3-1 for the UEFA Champions League Group stage Matchday three against Glasgow Rangers at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The change in tactics came in handy for Liverpool, as they walked back into the tunnel emerging victorious against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side. Trent Alexander-Arnold scored from a set-piece and Mohamed Salah showed composure to score from the penalty spot to seal the deal for the Reds.
Speaking about the performance (via The Independent [Subscription Required]), Liverpool gaffer Klopp said that he “liked the game a lot”. The Reds created numerous chances and were solid at the back as well.
“Good game, actioned the game we wanted to play. A really good defensive performance in a new structure, offensively created an awful lot. The Rangers goalie had some really nice saves and we missed some other (chances) but I liked it a lot.”
Coming into this game, Liverpool were not in the best of form. A 3-3 draw to Brighton and Hove Albion midweek in the Premier League could have motivated Klopp’s decision to change from his trusted 4-3-3 formation to a new 4-2-3-1.
From the line-up which faced the Seagulls, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and Fabio Carvalho made way for Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. The quartet shone and caused several problems for the Rangers’ defence.
Moreover, it was refreshing to see Jota in the CAM position and Darwin caused a lot of mayhem in the Rangers’ backline with his movement. Even though he did not score a goal, Nunez was good in the game.
Additionally, Trent Alexander-Arnold had a great performance amid lots of criticism for his defending. The right-back scored from a free-kick and also put in a wonderful defensive performance. It was extremely important for him to put in a good game because of his scrutiny and he made sure it was one.
With his trusted 4-3-3 not yielding any great results so far in the season, Jurgen Klopp could switch over permanently to a new formation so that there is a new dynamic to the way Liverpool play their games
