Liverpool eyeing AC Milan star Ismael Bennacer as an alternative to Jude Bellingham
Per Spanish publishing Fichajes (h/t Liverpool Echo), if Liverpool have multiple hindrances in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, the Reds could turn their attentions to AC Milan’s Ismael Bennacer.
Even though Liverpool are leading the race to sign Bellingham, Real Madrid’s prolonged interest in the player could possibly see us fall short. It is wise of the Reds to have an alternative and the Arsenal academy graduate could turn out a good fit as well.
Last time around, Real Madrid won the race to sign Aurelien Tchoumani who was also subject to interest from Liverpool. To not repeat such a scenario would see the Reds left with egg on their face, the Merseysiders have probably made note of other midfielders who could potentially play at Anfield.
Bellingham or Bennacer?
Bennacer is a very capable and versatile midfielder who can play any of the roles in midfield. Although he is a defensive midfielder, he can play as well in central midfield too. The 24-year-old Algerian captained I Rossoneri in their UEFA Champions League game against Chelsea last week.
He could prove to be a good backup at defensive midfield for Fabinho, but the player is too good to be on the bench. With multiple openings in Liverpool’s central midfield given Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner’s advanced age, Bennacer in case he moves to Anfield, could play advanced midfield roles as well.
With the free-flowing attack at Liverpool very similar to what AC Milan play under Stefano Pioli, adaptation would not be a problem. Given how similar the setups for both European giants are, with attacking fullbacks and midfielders at the edge of the box for crosses, it could prove to be an excellent move for both Liverpool and Bennacer.
Benaccer is probably the Reds’ best bet in case a move for Bellingham fails to materialise. The Englishman’s value is at £131m. With Liverpool playing the way they are at the moment, it is tough to see why the Borussia Dortmund midfielder would want to move to Merseyside. Moreover, the financials of the deal might be a tough ask for the Reds.

As far as Bennacer’s contract situation and valuation are concerned, AC Milan value him at £28m and his current contract expires in 2024. In case he does not sign an extension, he could possibly be available at a cut price for the Reds next summer. With the disappointing show against Arsenal this weekend, the gaffer would be eager to add players to his roster come the transfer window.
