Jurgen Klopp hints Liverpool may not field a 4-4-2 vs Rangers in the Champions League

Speaking in an interview ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Rangers as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp hinted that it may be difficult for him to field a 4-4-2 against the Scottish giants due to injuries in his squad.

Klopp has been trying to change the formation to make Liverpool work this season in what has been a very tough start to the season for the Reds. He has been fielding a 4-4-2 formation in the past few days.

Whilst the move worked well against the same Scottish opponents in their first meeting last time around, the same cannot be said about the weekend when Arsenal managed to get the better of the Reds.

Arsenal played a great game that day and it was not exactly because of the formation that the Reds lost to the Gunners but there is a feeling that Liverpool get overrun in midfield when using this formation.

With a game against Rangers yet again midweek, Klopp has a dilemma to solve where he needs to decide if he wants to continue with the formation or revert back to the 4-3-3 that he used to deploy.

When quizzed about the same, the German tactician said that the injuries to Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold may make it difficult for the Reds to deploy such a tactic against the Rangers.

“I think the goals we conceded had nothing to do with the new system. We have to get used to it a bit more. Can we do it again? I don’t know because today we lost an important part of it [through injuries], so we have to see who is available for it in the next game.”

Once Diaz got injured in the Arsenal game, Liverpool brought on Roberto Firmino and still continued to play the same formation for the majority of the game. This could be an option for the game against Rangers.

It remains to be seen how Jurgen Klopp goes about handling this situation. The German tactician has too many questions to answer and it only keeps increasing with every game and there seem to be no solutions at all.
