“Second to none”- McCoist lavishes praise on Liverpool ace following Ibroz heroics

Ally McCoist praises Roberto Firmino after his splendid performance for Liverpool vsRangers at the Ibrox

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, former Glasgow Rangers striker and Scotland international Ally McCoist spoke highly of Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino after his performance against Rangers in the Reds’ 7-1 win at the Ibrox.

Firmino was exceptional on the night, leading the charge for the visitors. After Giovanni van Brockhorst’s side took an early lead, the Brazilian slotted home Liverpool’s equaliser in the first half from a Kostas Tsimikas set piece. Liverpool thus were level at the break.

Early in the second half, Bobby scored his second goal from a beautiful cross from Joe Gomez from the right flank. A typical Liverpool goal, perfect delivery from the Englishman who played right-back on the night, and Firmino just had to slot the ball in.

The former Hoffenheim striker’s last goal contribution of the day came with a beautiful rabona through ball to set it up for Darwin Nunez. He slotted Liverpool’s third goal into the far post away from the keeper.

Speaking of his performance, McCoist called him a “great footballer” and additionally called him “one of the most intelligent footballers” he had ever seen. Additionally, he spoke of Firmino’s game awareness and said it was among the best.

“Firmino is one of the most intelligent footballers I’ve seen in a long time. His game awareness and his game intelligence is absolutely second to none.”

“Great footballer. Quick feet, good in the air, but he’s intelligent, he sees it. He knows where to go, drops into pockets, knows when to go up in a forward position, can pass the ball. I think he’s a very, very clever player.”

Ressurection for Bobby Firmino

Moreover, with eight goals and four assists across all competitions this season in 12 appearances, Bobby is Liverpool’s joint-highest goal-scorer and assist-maker alongside Mohamed Salah who has the same number of goals and assists in one more appearance.

It was extremely crucial for Firmino to up his game this season, and the arrival of Darwin Nunez made it even more important for him to make a case for himself. With the World Cup later this year, Bobby’s form comes at the right moment to further intensify his chances of playing in the event.

Firmino’s current contract with the club will expire in 2023. An extension should for sure be on the way if he keeps playing the way he is right now, as he has been a major reason why Liverpool are not in a further worse state in the league this season.
