Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk talks about the Reds’ emphatic 7-1 win vs Glasgow Rangers on Wednesday night
Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo) after the conclusion of the game, Virgil van Dijk spoke about this win giving the team confidence going into the rest of the season and the preparation for the game against Manchester City this weekend.
It was a statement victory for Liverpool, who have obviously not started the season on the best note. Even in this game, Rangers took the lead early on and it was a task for Jurgen Klopp’s men to overcome that as well. A Roberto Firmino header ensured that the scores were level heading into the tunnel at halftime.
The second half, though, came out of nowhere and a flurry of goals followed. And Mohamed Salah, since his introduction to the game, broke multiple records in just six minutes and 12 seconds. Fastest UCL hat trick. the highest number of goals in the competition for an English club and whatnot.
Coming into the game, it wasn’t any secret that the Reds were, at least on paper, the favourites to beat Rangers despite Luis Diaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip missing from the line-up.
But being the favourites adds a different kind of pressure – and a different level of criticism if the job isn’t done as well as it is expected. Talking about the result, Virgil said the following to BT Sport via ECHO
“It was great. It’s not a bad thing winning 7-1 over here. From the outside point of view, everyone expected us to win here. We know we are in a tough period and we will take it game by game. We will prepare well and be ready for Sunday.”
Sunday Blockbuster
This win, even though it was not against the strongest opposition the Reds could come up against, will increase Liverpool’s confidence going further into the season and hopefully, make sure that the Merseysiders strive for more.
With an extremely important fixture coming up this weekend against Manchester City, the players must be in the right mindset heading into the game. It will, of course, be a barbarian task to handle Pep Guardiola’s men given the form they are in at the moment.
However, with the momentum on Liverpool’s side, they could pull off a victory against the Cityzens even with the multiple injury problems troubling the Reds at the moment. This is exactly what the Dutchman has tried to cover in his interview and as he said, Liverpool prepare well and are ready for the weekend.
As far as this result is concerned, it should act as a trigger to make the Reds grow their confidence going further into the season instead of making them complacent.
