Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy says Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso could be in-line to manage the club in the future
Speaking to Fair Betting Sites (h/t Liverpool Echo), Danny Murphy, who played for the Reds between 1997-2004 backed Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso to manage Liverpool in the future.
The pair spearheaded the Liverpool midfield together from 2004 until 2009 when the Spaniard moved to Real Madrid. Both players are currently managers and Murphy backs them to one day manage the Merseyside Red which brought them tremendous amounts of success.
Gerrard, at that point in time, was of the belief that Alonso could have been at the club for a longer period of time and their partnership ceased to exist for longer due to then-manager Rafa Benitez. However, the five years the duo managed the midfield for Liverpool were spectacular, to say the least.
Murphy said the following about the duo managing the Merseyside club in the future
“I think Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso could manage Liverpool, absolutely, yeah. I don’t think either of them have probably done just enough yet to warrant that. I don’t think there’s a Liverpool fan on the planet, irrelevant of the start of the season, that would be even thinking about a possible change with Klopp. I don’t see that at all.”
Alonso and Gerrard
Presently, Alonso is managing Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Prior to this, post his playing career, he was appointed as the assistant coach of Real Sociedad B. Off to a winning start with the Bundesliga team, the Spaniard is still in the learning process of management.
Gerrard, however, has been in the management side of the game for much longer. After his retirement, he saw himself appointed as Liverpool’s Youth Coach in 2017. In April 2018, he made the move to manage Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.
After three successful years at the Ibrox and winning a league title after 10 years for the Scottish outfit, he made the move to the Premier League to manage Aston Villa. Results under Gerrard are average for the Birmingham club and he has not had the easiest transition to managing a PL team.
With that spoken of already, a Liverpool fan could barely imagine cutting short on Jurgen Klopp’s contract to appoint someone else. Ideally, we would hope for Klopp to be there for as long as possible. The German’s contract runs until 2026.
