Speaking to talkSPORT (h/t The Express), former Liverpool winger Jemaine Pennant believes that Liverpool are not performing as they should due to the lack of freshening up in the central areas of the pitch. He was part of the squad that faced AC Milan in the final of the 2007 UEFA Champions League.
Pennant believes that this could be due to the fact that the gaffer Jurgen Klopp has not had enough backing from the owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Even though Liverpool made a few signings in Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay, the position wherein the Reds’ actually needed refreshments was the central midfield one.
With most of Liverpool’s midfielders over the age of 30, the Reds are transitioning and need good quality young starter midfielders to compete for all the four trophies the club is competing in.
James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara are all over the age of 30 and the Reds certainly need new bodies in the middle of the park. Moreover, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain run out of contract next summer, which will just warrant the need for new players.
Here is what Pennant said:
“They didn’t freshen up the midfield. Okay Mane went and they brought in Nunez as a kind of replacement, not for the player but getting a top striker in. But everyone else around them strengthening, everyone else is getting stronger, getting in players in places they need to strengthen. Liverpool haven’t.”
Unsurprisingly, the Reds have not yet found a replacement for Gini Wijnaldum who left the club in 2021. A box-to-box player, almost never out with injury, Liverpool would pay a fortune for a player like that right now.
Jude Bellingham is one of the top names linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks, but the Reds will face a lot of competition from Real Madrid in their pursuit of the midfielder. It makes it tough for the Reds to get their first-choice transfer targets.
The recruitment team would surely have alternatives on their list. With the injury situation surrounding Arthur as well, it is extremely necessary to get a new body in the middle of the park for the Reds.
Presently, Liverpool playing a new formation makes things easier, but still, we would need new players and cannot use that as an excuse to not make any signings and transfers this January window or the next summer.
