Jose Enrique urges Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp to strengthen three key positions in the transfer window
Speaking to Midnite (h/t The Express), former Liverpool star Jose Enrique has urged the club to strengthen three key positions in the January transfer window.
Despite impressing in the Community Shield, the Reds have endured a tricky start to the campaign and are well off the pace in the race for the Premier League title. Despite looking set to qualify for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, Jurgen Klopp and co still lack conviction.
They next face defending champions Manchester City at Anfield. Touted as the two clubs to challenge for the title this season, the visitors could all but end our pursuit of a second league title under Klopp.
Speaking ahead of the game, Enrique highlighted three positions on the Reds’ roster that needs reinforcing. He also urged the club to make moves in the upcoming January transfer window to address these deficiencies.
“It’s a number eight, it’s a right-winger and a right-back.”
Enrique believes the club currently need a number eight, a right-back and a right-winger. Naby Keita could don the role in midfield but his constant absences due to injuries have left us short of options.
Trent Alexander-Arnold looks uninterested in defending this season and could be pushed upfield to play as a winger. Mohamed Salah has been unimpressive hugging the line and is better off playing upfront given his keen eye for goal.
The Reds brought in Calvin Ramsay last summer but he is yet to make his debut for the Reds. Given his lack of experience in the Premier League, one can question if he can become a regular at right-back should Alexander-Arnold be deployed on the wing.
Enrique goes on to add that the Reds put themselves in this position thanks to not strengthening their roster. While he does believe that signing Jude Bellingham could prove decisive, the chances of Liverpool going crazy in January is unrealistic.
“I don’t think they are going to do much in January. But the one player who could really make a difference is Jude Bellingham.”
