Jamie Carragher warns Liverpool to focus on Kevin de Bruyne instead of Erling Haaland vs Manchester City
Liverpool will lock horns with their rivals Manchester City at Anfield this Sunday. The Reds will have a barbarian task to stop Erling Haaland, who seems to be on a scoring spree in the Premier League.
The Norweigan is the highest goal-scorer in the league (15 goals) and the UEFA Champions League (5 goals). Haaland has broken multiple records already in his brief while in the English top division. The Manchester City-Liverpool fixture comes at a time wherein the Reds’ defence has not been in form.
As important as it is for Jurgen Klopp’s men to stop the former Borussia Dortmund striker from marauding their backline, former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher believes that the players should be focused on negating the effect of Kevin de Bruyne more than Haaland.
Writing in his exclusive column for Sky Sports, here is what Carra had to say about the Belgian’s potential threat against Liverpool:
“I’d almost be more focused on De Bruyne rather than Haaland in this game. If you stop De Bruyne, you take 50 per cent away from Haaland as well as the connection the two have got is there already. And for me, De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world.”

De Bruyne has also been sublime this season, as always. And with someone as clinical as Haaland for him upfront, the threat he possesses would naturally go up. The former Chelsea midfielder this season has nine assists in the Premier League in as many appearances.
It is not possible to label one player out of two as a greater threat, but for sure, if Liverpool manage to keep De Bruyne under check, the Reds could certainly make a match out of things. Given the situation the Merseysiders find themselves in, at least in the league, we could have an unpleasant match at hand.
However, winning 7-1 in the last game against Glasgow Rangers would have certainly helped Liverpool’s cause. They would be carrying momentum into the game and would hope to see a win out of this fixture, which could define their season from this point onwards.
