Liverpool releases official statement condemning the vile chants made by Manchester City supporters

Football is called a beautiful game due to the manner in which it unites different cultures of the world. What makes the game so special is the massive involvement of supporters which inbred the local culture into the football game.

The game is nothing without its fans however sometimes there does come out a negative aspect of fan participation where certain supporters end up disregarding important history attached to respective clubs, hence tarnishing a bad image of the game.

One such incident occurred in Liverpool’s league game against Manchester City with the Merseyside club releasing an official statement (h/t ESPN) towards vile chants made by the away section.

Vile chants directed at the Hillsborough disaster were made by the away supporters in Liverpool versus Manchester City

“We are deeply disappointed to hear vile chants relating to football stadium tragedies from the away section during today’s game at Anfield.

We know the impact such behaviour has on the families, survivors and all those associated with such disasters.”

The disasters referred to in question have been the horrifying Hillsborough disaster in 1989 and the heavy riots before the 1985 European Cup final game between Liverpool and Juventus at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

Supporters changing to vile chants have been a rather common occurrence with no harsh penalty being levied for such behaviour, hence promoting the actions.

As mentioned above, the game is nothing without its supporters. But if the supporters do not reciprocate with the same level of respect, questions can be raised on the authenticity of the game itself.

Under no circumstances is it correct to withstand such behaviour and the governing body of the sport should lay down the strictest of penalties to prevent such behaviour from happening in the future.

The aspect of slogans and banter between supporters is understandable till the moment each party understands the value of sportsmanship and respect for different values and cultures.

Only then, the game would continue to sustain its global participation and dominance which has made it into a phenomenon that the game amounts to presently. Hopefully, strict actions are taken against the concerned parties which set a precedent to prevent such vile incidents.
