“We have to stay open”- Jurgen Klopp answers if Liverpool will stick to a 4-4-2 formation in future games

Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp opens up about formations and game tactics

The 4-3-3 tactic, which has been predominantly used by Jurgen Klopp during his tenure at Liverpool but has not been as effective as it used to be earlier. The German chose to then shift to a 4-4-2 formation against Rangers in the UEFA Champions League.

A 2-0 win followed against the Scottish outfit at Anfield. Winning three games on the trot with this formation including one league win against Manchester City might have cornered Klopp to think about the formation as a long-term fix for the wobbly start Liverpool had earlier this season.

A basic 4-4-2 in the games and shifting to a 4-2-3-1 as and when the situation demands is something Jurgen Klopp is “open to”. Moreover, with the 4-3-3 getting stale, it is commendable that the German is trying new tactics to get the best out of his players.

Speaking to the club’s official website, here is what Klopp said talking about new formations and trying to stay open to trying new things so that it is unpredictable for the opposition:

“We have to stay open for all different possibilities what we can do and then we make decisions about that. It’s about what is best for us and what is the worst for the opponent. That’s pretty much how you try to set up, that’s what we always did and will do.”

Formation luck for the Reds?

Liverpool can extract the best of one of the club’s most important players in Mohamed Salah if he could play closer to the goal and try and put the team in a better position. Moreover, with Darwin Nunez’s pace upfront, backlines could have a tough task keeping the Reds at bay.

Joe Gomez has been very impressive in both, right-back and centre-back roles and he is pushing Joel Matip for a starting spot. However, with an ageing midfield, it becomes crucial for the Reds’ to find long-term options to replace the current lot.

The formation is well and good as long as the results are coming through. But given that the season is headed towards an important junction wherein the margin for error decreases furthermore, there is no time for experimentations, and the club would be wise to go ahead with what was pre-meditated.
