“Big mistake from us”- Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool only have themselves to blame for Forest defeat

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp opens up on the reversal to Nottingham Forest

Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Eurosport), Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had no words to describe his side’s latest defeat, this time to Nottingham Forest.

The Reds travelled to City Ground, an arena where they prevailed 1-0 last season en route to FA Cup glory. A repeat was not on the cards as a wasteful Reds attack failed to beat Dean Henderson on the night.

In the end, it was a former Red, Taiwo Awoniyi who settled the tie. The Nigerian found the back of the net in the 55th minute. Liverpool made a play to fight their way back but had to settle for yet another Premier League defeat this season.

The Reds had several opportunities to put the game to bed. Despite not being at their best, the Merseysiders had enough chances to secure all three points. Klopp believes his team should have made the most of their opportunities and settled the game with plenty to spare.

“I never saw a game where one team has four or five no-brainers from a set piece where we have to finish it off. The way they defend we were perfectly prepared for that. We had to put the game to bed to be perfectly honest.”

The loss negates the good work done by the club in their last two games against Manchester City and West Ham United. However, the Reds only have themselves to blame for not seizing the moment.

The German was also less than complimentary regarding his side’s inability to keep things tight at the back. The buildup to Forest’s winner originated from a poor freekick conceded by the Reds and Klopp is well aware of it.

“The goal we conceded was a big mistake from us. We lose the ball and give them the free-kick and this can happen around set pieces. Apart from that, all the chances they had we gave them.”

The loss leaves Liverpool with much to do in the remainder of the season. Dropping cheap points, especially to the teams that we should be beating is never a good sign. Change is needed on the field and it is time that players start taking accountability for their performances.

Liverpool have been the Jekyll and Hyde of the English top-flight season. Putting in a lifeless performance like tonight given the ground we have to cover this season is just unacceptable. The likes of Fabinho will do well to remember that there is no place for half-hearted performances in a red shirt.
