Martin Keown showers praise on Joe Gomez after his recent string of performances
Joe Gomez got an opportunity to play at right-back against Arsenal after Trent Alexander-Arnold saw himself off the pitch after the first half due to an ankle issue. He proved to be one of Liverpool’s best players in the second 45 after a stellar performance.
He subsequently started at right-back against Glasgow Rangers as well putting in a very strong performance. Following one more injury, and this time to Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate suffering a recurrence of a previous issue, Gomez partnered with Virgil van Dijk as centre-back against Manchester City.
He was excellent at keeping the in-form Erling Haaland in check, and contributed to Liverpool’s clean sheet and earned a lot of praise for his performances. The 25-year-old is putting a real case for himself to start more games.
Arsenal legend and pundit Martin Keowe, speaking exclusively to talkSPORT said that Gomez had a tough return from his ACL injury and also added this:
“A lot of people seem to be against Gomez, I’m a big admirer. He had a dreadful injury on the back of doing an ACL, getting badly injured when he first came to Liverpool. I think he’s an outstanding talent.”
“I think we may have been denied one of the best ever partnerships with him and Van Dijk in the middle. There’s a quality about his pace, there’s a swagger about him, he passes the ball really well. I’m not sure we can turn our back on a player like that.”
Joey Gomez back in form
Gomez has missed 136 games for Liverpool due to injury and the fact that he has signed a new long-term contract very recently adds to the need for him to stay fit for as long as possible as he is an extremely top-class talent.
Going back to the 19/20 season, Joe along with Virgil was an integral part of our successful domestic campaign wherein Liverpool won the league after 30 years. Gomez has 153 appearances for the Reds including 95 in the Premier League.
Following the injuries to Matip and Konate, we have seen a resurgence of sorts in terms of Gomez’s performances and hope that this goes on for as long as possible. The player is still young and has loads of potential to fulfil and put in top-class performances for Liverpool.
