Liverpool best positioned to sign Borussia Dortmund teenager Youssoufa Moukoko

According to Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are in the best position and lead the race to sign Borussia Dortmund’s teenage striker Youssoufa Moukoko. The 17-year-old broke through last season and is generating shockwaves all across Europe.

Alongside Moukoko, the other Dortmund player Liverpool have an interest in is Jude Bellingham. However, the Englishman’s high valuation of around £131m makes it tough for the Reds to view him as a realistic target.

Moukoko on the other hand seems a more realistic target. The highly talented player has in 53 appearances for the senior team of Borussia Dortmund, scored nine goals and has seven assists. He has been playing extremely well this season and four of those nine have come in the Bundesliga in just this campaign.

Roberto Firmino runs out of contract in 2023 (Transfermarkt). Liverpool might be looking at Moukoko as a long-term replacement for the Brazilian, for whom a new deal might as well be on the way given how well he has performed for the Reds this season.

Moreover, apart from Bobby and Mohamed Salah, no present Liverpool attacker is over the age of 30. Hence, one could make the argument that the Reds could probably channel those funds towards signing a midfielder instead of adding another attacking option.

Not taking anything away from the talent and level of skill at Moukoko’s disposal, the Reds might not exactly be in the search of a new attacker. However, if the management at Liverpool decides against giving Bobby a new contract, Moukoko could well and truly be a decent replacement.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are all keeping close tabs on the German international’s situation and hence, it would be wise if Liverpool move early for him in case the interest is concrete.

Having said that, it is also important to note that a forward might just not be the best investment at this point in time given the age of the midfield and the almost immediate need to find replacements in the middle of the park.
