Club News: Virgil van Dijk says he has a ‘very big’ bond with Andrew Robertson
Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk has said that he has a ‘very big’ bond with fellow team-mate and left-back Andrew Robertson.
Speaking on Gary Neville’s ‘The Overlap’ series (h/t Liverpool Echo), the 31-year-old described the bond he has with the Scotsman.
“I think since before I joined, the first half of the season, when I wasn’t at Liverpool he [Robertson] didn’t play much, he started to play and that relationship got stronger and stronger. With all the experiences we’ve got, the success we had, the bond is very big.”
Both the defenders have been regular for Jurgen Klopp and have partnered each other on the left side of many successful games and tournaments.
Robertson joined the Reds in the summer of 2017 from Hull City while Van Dijk arrived in January of 2018 from Premier League rivals Southampton.
Since then, both the defenders have established themselves in the team and have won multiple titles together including a Premier League, Champions League and the FA Cup.
This season has been the same, although the Scottish international has missed few of the games due to injury. Van Dijk, on the other hand has played in all the games this season in all competitions.
Both the players have time on their current contracts. Robertson sees his current deal expire in 2026 (transfermarkt) while the Dutchman sees his expire in 2025 (transfermarkt).
